About the Department

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 2006 in the Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering. The first batch consisted of 60 students who passed with a B.E in Mechanical Engineering from Gujarat University (GU) in the year 2010. In 2012 the Department came under Indus University and the first batch of Mechanical Engineer from Indus University with a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree will be out in 2016. A Master of Technology program was started in 2011 with an intake of 18 students offering (M. Tech) in CAD/CAM. Now the department has an intake of 180 students per year. It is the biggest departments of the institute having total undergraduate strength 0f 650 students.

While managing this huge strength which is an urgent need of the nation, department is committed to well being and all round development of its students. The department currently runs one undergraduate program, one masters program & a Ph.D Program.


To be recognized as a ‘Center of Excellence’ in academic, consultancy, research and development in both conventional and advanced speciality fields of Mechanical Engineering.


Department of Mechanical Engineering wants to be in the forefront of academics with its student performance through meaningful and rewarding consultancy, research and development activities by involving its young members; and with state-of-art laboratories exposing its students to the current professional practices and inculcating in them the importance of ethical and moral standards following the philosophy ‘where practice meets theory’.

B. Tech. (Mechanical Engineering)

Objective of the program

Objective of the undergraduate program is to prepare world-class mechanical engineers. Most of the students, who graduate from the department, end up taking leading positions in industry, academics and government in both India and abroad.

Department has currently one masters program with current intake of 18 students per year:

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) -

Computer Aided manufacturing is branch of use of wide range of computer-based tools that assist engineers in their design and manufacturing activities. It involves both software and hardware. The functional area of modern CAD/CAM systems include advanced design, geometric modelling, analysis and optimization, validation and simulation etc. which helps to generate quicker and more efficient real time scope to CAD/CAM personal in current industries.

Objectives of the Programme:

  •     To give students in-depth technical knowledge in the areas of CAD/CAM
  •     To synthesize and apply the concepts learnt
  •     To provide experience in team-based engineering design projects
  •     The emphasis is on mathematical modelling and the application of quantitative techniques associated with design, manufacturing, optimization, probability and statistics to the design and operation of the systems.

The curriculum is designed in consultation with expert academicians and industry people keeping in view the present technological developments and industry needs. The programme is conducted by well-versed experienced faculty, invited experts from reputed institutions and industries.

Teaching Aid (Resources)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has well equipped classrooms, computer labs, and teaching and research labs for its students. All of the classrooms are equipped with a computer and projector system with internet access and a blackboard. In addition, the department maintains the computer lab with internet access capability.

Mechanical Engineering overlaps with aerospace, metallurgical, civil, electrical, petroleum, manufacturing, chemical and other engineering disciplines in such a way that a graduate in Mechanical Engineering finds varieties of opportunities is such environments.

Laboratories - Mechanical Engineering Department



Mechanics of Solids: This laboratory includes equipments like; Universal, Hardness, Torsion, Fatigue, Impact testing machines, Laws of Polygon and apparatus like; Bell Crank Lever, Deflation of Beam, Pulleys demonstration etc.

Elements of Mechanical Engineering: This laboratory includes; models of all types of Boilers, Mountings and Accessories, different types of Brakes, Clutches, Couplings, Gears and other important basic mechanical components

Kinematics and Dynamics (Design) Laboratory: This laboratory include; models of different type of mechanisms, apparatus like; Cam and Follower, Turn Table, Spring Mass System, Universal Governor, Universal Vibration, Journal Bearing test rig, Motorized Gyroscope, Static and Dynamic Balancing machines etc.


Thermal Engineering: This laboratory includes; major test rig like; Heat Pump (Air & water type), Four Stroke Cylinder Diesel Engine, Single Cylinder Reciprocating Engine


Metrology and Instrumentation: This laboratory includes; different types of Vernier Calipers, Micro Meters, Sine Bar, Surface Roughness Measurement, Dial Gauge with Magnetic block, Optical Flat, different gauges etc.

Central workshop: This laboratory includes; heavy duty and light duty Lathes, Planer, Shaper, Drilling Machine, Grinding Machine, Hacksaw Cutting Machine, Capstone Lathe, Carpentry, Fitting, Plumbing and Welding Wises etc.

Heat and Mass Transfer: This Laboratory Includes; Instrument Like Thermal Conductivity,. Critical Heat Flux Apparatus, Stefan Boltzmann Apparatus, Heat Transfer Through Pin fin Method, Emissivity Measurements, Heat Transfer through natural and forced Convection and Composite walls.

CAD/CAM: This laboratory includes; highly configured Computers with CAD/CAM software and CNC Turn, CNC Mill and six axis Robot.
